The sorrowful melodies of Azorean folk music undergo changes in Faial that make them different and give them a peculiar charm. The most typical balhos are the Pezinho and Chamarrita, with a measured and gracious beat.
The love of music of the people of Faial is also reflected in the seven bands that enliven festivals and above all in the tunas which are groups of players of stringed instruments, the outstanding of which is the characteristic guitar called the viola arame, beloved of all Azoreans. This love for music gives rise to a curious ceremony in honour of St. Cecilia, the patron of musicians, which joins together all the musicians in the island in the parish church of Horta.
