The mournful melodies of the folk music of Terceira, which are produced by the typical guitars, drums and triangles, are expressed in dances with names such as the são-macaio, tirana and sapateia, in which the skilful and agile dancers repeat traditional steps. The "challenge" engaged in by singers is one of the ways the people have of expressing their joy, and very often the words of the songs are of an ironic and critical vein.
